These terms apply when you use ScoreLens. Installing or using the app means you accept them.
The short version. Scan music you have the right to scan. Recognition is imperfect and you should check the result against the page before you rely on it. Purchases are handled by Apple and Google, and refunds go through them. We can't promise the app is error-free, and our liability is limited to what you paid.
What ScoreLens does
ScoreLens photographs printed sheet music and converts it into a score you can view, play back, transpose and export as MIDI, MusicXML or PDF. Recognition runs on our server and needs an internet connection.
The app is built for single-line parts — voice, wind, strings, guitar, choir and orchestra parts, method books. It is not built for piano polyphony, handwritten manuscript or tablature, and we do not promise usable results for those.
Recognition is not guaranteed to be correct
Optical music recognition is difficult, and ScoreLens will sometimes read a note, a rhythm or a marking wrongly, or fail on a page altogether. The app flags some problems it can detect, but the absence of a warning does not mean the result is correct.
Always check the recognised score against the printed page before you learn, perform, record, teach or publish from it. ScoreLens is a tool to save you typing, not an authority on what the music says. We are not responsible for the consequences of a mistaken recognition, including time spent learning something incorrectly.
What you may scan
You are responsible for having the right to scan and convert whatever you photograph. Most printed sheet music is protected by copyright, and the fact that you own a physical copy does not by itself give you the right to create or distribute a digital version of it.
Use ScoreLens for material that is in the public domain, that you own the rights to, that you have permission to convert, or that the law of your country permits you to copy for private study. Do not use it to produce or distribute copies you are not entitled to make. If a rights holder contacts us about material sent through the report button, we will remove it.
The free allowance and Pro
ScoreLens includes a limited number of free page recognitions per device within a rolling window; the current limit is shown in the app and in the store listing. The count is kept per device, and reinstalling the app does not reset it.
ScoreLens Pro removes that limit and unlocks export. Prices are shown in the app before purchase in your local currency. Purchases are sold and processed by Apple or Google, not by us: your contract for the payment itself is with the store, and their terms govern billing, renewal and refunds.
If Pro is sold as a subscription it renews automatically until you cancel it, which you do in your App Store or Google Play account settings rather than in the app. If it is sold as a one-time purchase it does not renew. Cancelling stops future charges; it does not refund charges already made.
Refunds are handled by the store that took your money. Ask Apple or Google through their refund process. We cannot issue a refund for a purchase we did not process, but if something is wrong with the app, write to hello@scorelens.app and we will help where we can.
The Pro features available may change as the app develops. If a feature you paid for is removed, we will say so in the release notes.
Acceptable use
- Do not attempt to break, overload or circumvent the recognition service, the free-page limit, or the purchase checks.
- Do not automate uploads or use the service other than through the app.
- Do not upload material that is unlawful where you are.
We may refuse service to a device that does these things.
The service can change or stop
ScoreLens depends on a server we run. We aim to keep it available, but we do not promise uptime, and recognition may be unavailable during maintenance or outages. We may change, suspend or discontinue the service. If we ever shut the service down permanently, we will give notice in the app or on this site where we reasonably can.
Your library lives on your device and remains readable in the app, but recognising new pages requires the service to be running.
Your content
The photographs you take and the scores produced from them are yours. We claim no ownership of them. The one exception is material you deliberately send through the report button, which you allow us to keep and use to improve recognition, as described in the Privacy Policy.
The app itself
ScoreLens, its name, design and code are ours, apart from open-source components used under their own licences. The recognition engine used on the server is open source under the AGPL, and the server source is published accordingly.
Warranties and liability
ScoreLens is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not warrant that recognition will be accurate, that the service will be uninterrupted, or that the app will suit a particular purpose.
To the extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim relating to ScoreLens is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including lost performances, lost work or lost time.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, you keep all the mandatory rights your local consumer law gives you, and these terms do not take them away.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of Poland. If you are a consumer, you may also rely on the mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live, and may bring proceedings there.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the current version, and material changes appear here before they take effect. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the updated terms.
