What it works on

The top voice of a four-horn chorale in C major and 4/4, mostly half notes, with B-flats and a few quarter notes. It sits between F4 and A5 as written for horn in F, so the leaps to the high notes land on slow, held notes.

No. 6, “Un Choral”, part for horn 1.

A way to practise it

Play it with the other three horns: the chorale only makes sense as four voices. Loop one phrase (the fermatas end each one) at the slow tempo until the halves are even, then raise the tempo by 4.

The page prints the tempo as a word, “Choral”. The numbers below are my suggestions for getting there, in quarter notes per minute; tap them in the player.

  • Slow ♩ = 50
  • Practice ♩ = 60
  • Goal ♩ = 72

What you hear

The notes and rhythms of the study, played at an even volume. Slurs, bowings, dynamics, fingerings, trills and turns are not in this version, so keep the printed page in front of you; the scan is linked under “Where the notes come from”.

Questions

What tempo should I play Tcherepnin Un Choral, Horn 1 at?
The printed tempo is a word, “Choral”, not a number. Start around ♩ = 50, practise at 60 and aim for about 72 quarter notes a minute. The player takes any tempo between those and more.
What does Tcherepnin Un Choral, Horn 1 (Op. 35 No. 6) work on?
The top voice of a four-horn chorale in C major and 4/4, mostly half notes, with B-flats and a few quarter notes. It sits between F4 and A5 as written for horn in F, so the leaps to the high notes land on slow, held notes.
Is this in written or concert pitch?
Written pitch, as printed for F horn. The player plays it at the pitch it sounds, a fifth lower than written.
Can I play Tcherepnin Un Choral, Horn 1 on B♭ clarinet or B♭ trumpet or E♭ alto sax?
Yes. Pick your instrument under “Written for” in the player: the part is moved into that instrument's key and still sounds at the original pitch, so you can play it alongside the f horn version.
Where can I get the sheet music for Tcherepnin Un Choral, Horn 1 (Op. 35 No. 6)?
It is public domain. The notes here come from P. Jurgenson, Moscow, 1910 (plates 34072–34073), part book, which is scanned on IMSLP. Keep the printed page in front of you for slurs and dynamics, which the player leaves out.

This player is the one in the app. Point your phone at the page on your music stand, and ScoreLens reads it and plays it back, slower or in another key. It is best on single-line parts and reads piano too. Handwriting is out of reach for now.
